Home renovation is a large but broadly defined U.S. activity. Recent data distinguish major improvements from routine maintenance, while market estimates may combine improvements, maintenance and repairs, so the figures below identify their population, period and measurement type.

Home Renovation Market Size and Spending Trends
The American Housing Survey recorded $827 billion in improvement spending by U.S. homeowners during 2021–2023. This total covers improvements rather than all home maintenance or repair spending, and the AHS uses a major-alteration or improvement definition. 2023 Home Improvements: American Housing Survey infographic
The Joint Center for Housing Studies uses a broader market frame in some measures, combining improvements with maintenance and repairs. Its modeled estimate put the U.S. remodeling market at $611 billion in 2022, while the Great Recession comparison shows a 17% peak-to-trough decline. Improving America’s Housing 2025
Recent JCHS market figures should be read as estimates or forecasts rather than completed-year survey totals:
- JCHS estimated remodeling-market growth at -1.5% in 2024 in the United States.
- JCHS forecast 1% growth for 2025, based on the 2024 Q4 Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity and its underlying source series.
- Annual spending on improvements and repairs to owner-occupied homes rose 24% from 2019 to 2021, reaching $406 billion.
- Owner-occupied homes accounted for more than 80% of total remodeling expenditures in 2023, a spending share rather than a share of projects or households.
- Average homeowner improvement spending was almost $4,700 in 2023; this is an average, not a median, and excludes routine maintenance in that comparison.
Home Renovation Participation and Improvement Activity
Participation depends heavily on the definition used. The AHS counted 51.6 million homeowners, or 59%, making improvements during 2021–2023, while JCHS tabulations counted nearly 26 million owners undertaking improvements in 2023.
The comparable JCHS improvement measure increased from just over 22 million owners, or 28.0%, in 2019, to nearly 26 million, or 29.7%, in 2023. The AHS measure excludes minor repairs and routine maintenance, so these figures should not be treated as a complete count of every home project.
Maintenance is a separate activity in the JCHS classification:
- About 60 million homeowners undertook maintenance in 2019.
- About 65 million homeowners undertook maintenance in 2023.
- 75% of owners spent on maintenance in 2023, distinct from discretionary improvements.
Energy-related work was a substantial subset of AHS improvement activity. During 2021–2023, 14.7 million homeowners who improved their homes made energy-efficiency improvements, equal to 28% of improvers, not 28% of all homeowners. Improving America’s Housing 2025
Houzz participation data describe a platform survey rather than a probability sample. Its 2023 study surveyed 17,713 renovating U.S. homeowners within 32,615 total respondents, and more than 90% of renovating homeowners hired professional help. 2024 U.S. Houzz & Home Study: Renovation Trends

Renovation Budgets, Funding and Professional Help
Savings remained the most frequently reported funding source among Houzz renovating homeowners in 2023. Because respondents could report multiple sources, the percentages below do not represent mutually exclusive budget shares.
- 83% used cash from savings.
- 37% used credit cards, up from 28% in 2022.
- For projects costing $50,000–$200,000, 23% used home loans and 21% used cash from home sales.
Budget outcomes also varied from the original plan. Nationally, 39% of Houzz renovating homeowners spent more than budgeted in 2023, while only 3% came in under budget.
These are reported outcomes among surveyed renovators, not a cost-overrun estimate for all U.S. homeowners. 2024 U.S. Houzz & Home Renovation Trends by Metro
Professional involvement was common, but provider categories moved differently between 2022 and 2023. The share hiring specialty service providers rose from 46% to 47%, while the share hiring construction professionals fell from 44% to 42%; among those hiring specialty providers, the average was 1.7 providers in both years. 2024 U.S. Houzz & Home Study: Renovation Trends
Home Renovation Priorities, Motivations and Project Choices
Among renovating Houzz homeowners in 2023, kitchens were the leading interior room project. Project shares can overlap because homeowners may renovate multiple rooms.

| Guest bathroom | 27% | 2023 |
| Primary bathroom | 25% | 2023 |

The median kitchen-renovation spend reached $24,000 in 2023 after rising 20%, while the median primary-bath renovation spend reached $15,000 after rising 11%. These are nominal year-over-year median changes among Houzz project respondents. 2024 U.S. Houzz & Home Study: Renovation Trends
Motivations included timing, finances and practical needs. Finally having time motivated 39% of renovating Houzz homeowners nationally, and finally having money motivated 36%; multiple motivations were allowed.
In bathroom studies, functionality or accommodation rose from 23% in 2023 to 27% in 2024, while improving resale value fell from 31% to 26%. These motivations do not measure resale returns. 2024 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study

It also reported that 46% planned large-scale projects over the next five years, with kitchen remodels planned by 31% and bathroom upgrades by 28%; these are intentions, not completed renovations. Regional Renovation Data and Industry Outlook
Houzz metro data show substantial differences in reported median renovation spending among the top-50 U.S. metros analyzed for 2023. The measures are survey medians and are not inflation-adjusted.
| Metro area | Median renovation spend, 2023 |
|---|---|
| San Francisco | $50,000 |
| San Jose | $40,000 |
| Memphis | $38,900 |
| Seattle | $36,000 |
| Los Angeles | $35,000 |
| Kansas City | $15,000 |
| Raleigh | $15,000 |

Metro-level budget outcomes are not directly interchangeable with national survey results because project mix and sample composition differ. 2024 U.S. Houzz & Home Renovation Trends by Metro
Industry capacity indicators describe businesses rather than homeowner wait times. At the start of Q4 2024, the national construction-sector project backlog was 10.5 weeks; build-only remodelers reported 8.3 weeks, and design-build remodelers reported 12.8 weeks. 2024Q4 Houzz Renovation Barometer – Construction Sector
Regional construction backlogs ranged from 3.4 weeks in East South Central to 14.3 weeks in West North Central in the same business survey. Its Q4 2024 diffusion-style indicators were 62 for expected business activity, 59 for inquiry expectations and 64 for new committed projects; values above 50 imply more increases than decreases, not percentage growth. 2024Q4 Houzz Renovation Barometer – Construction Sector
